Mavious Redmond, a resident of Austin, Minnesota, has entered a guilty plea concerning the theft of government funds after admitting to a long-running social security fraud scam. Acting U.S. Attorney Lisa D. Kirkpatrick announced this development.
Court documents reveal that Redmond, aged 54, engaged in a fraudulent scheme that spanned over 25 years, beginning with the collection of her deceased mother's social security benefits after her passing in January 1999. Redmond impersonated her mother on multiple occasions to perpetuate this fraud. Notably, on June 4, 2024, Redmond visited the Social Security Administration (SSA) office, posing as her mother, to submit a fraudulent application form. She repeated the act on June 20, 2024, resubmitting documentation and a form with a forged signature.
Throughout this period from January 1999 to June 2024, Redmond collected more than $360,000 intended for her mother.
Addressing this case, Acting U.S. Attorney Lisa D. Kirkpatrick stated, "We are awash in federal programs fraud. Redmond stole well more than a quarter million dollars in taxpayer funds. She scammed social security for literal decades. No more. My office will continue to aggressively pursue the federal programs fraud that plagues Minnesota."
Redmond has pleaded guilty to one count of theft of government funds before Judge Nancy E. Brasel on April 9, 2025. Her sentencing is scheduled for a future date.
This case was investigated by the Social Security Administration – Office of Inspector General, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew D. Evans prosecuting.
