A Mexican national admitted to a drug smuggling charge in a federal court in Del Rio, Texas. The individual, Genaro Ivan Hernandez-Sarabia, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine. His arrest occurred when he attempted to enter the U.S. from Mexico on September 22, 2024, at the Eagle Pass Port of Entry.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers and a K-9 unit discovered a hidden compartment in Hernandez-Sarabia’s vehicle containing 32 packages of cocaine, amounting to 27.66 kilograms. Hernandez-Sarabia confessed to being paid $5,000 to transport the cocaine to Houston.

Margaret Leachman, the Acting U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas, announced the plea. Hernandez-Sarabia could face a sentence of 10 years to life imprisonment, which will be decided by a federal district court judge considering U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other legal factors.

The investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations and Customs and Border Protection. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Matt Kass.
