Ricky Corey Watkins, Jr., 33, of Washington, D.C., faces charges over unlawful firearm possession as a felon. The indictment announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin Jr., alongside Anthony Spotswood, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).
According to provided court documents, officers from MPD responded to a report on March 19, 2025, at Harrison Recreation Center, where someone was reportedly riding a dirt bike on the baseball field. Watkins, who was identified as the rider, was detained. During detainment, Watkins alleged an injury, prompting a response from D.C. Fire and Emergency Services. Watkins reportedly attempted to flee while being informed he would undergo a search before transport by ambulance. Allegedly, while fleeing in handcuffs, Watkins disposed of a firearm, which was subsequently retrieved by the police.
The weapon involved, a 9mm Glock Model 19X, was loaded, having one round in the chamber and fourteen more in the magazine. It also had a laser sight attachment. Further investigation of Watkins' criminal record revealed prior felony convictions that bar him from firearm or ammunition possession.
The ongoing investigation is conducted by the ATF Washington Field Office in cooperation with the Metropolitan Police Department. The case is prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney James B. Nelson.
The public is reminded that an indictment constitutes an allegation, with all defendants treated as innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
