Jack Carroll, Jr., a 52-year-old federal inmate at the Federal Correction Institution Schuylkill in Pennsylvania, has been charged with possessing contraband in prison. The charge was announced by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania on March 4, 2025.
Acting United States Attorney John C. Gurganus stated that the indictment alleges Carroll possessed three inmate-manufactured weapons while incarcerated at FCI Schuylkill on or about December 11, 2024. These weapons included a five-inch piece of glass and two six-inch pieces of plexiglass, all sharpened to points and commonly known as "shanks."
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Federal Bureau of Prisons Special Investigative Service. Assistant United States Attorney Tatum R. Wilson is handling the prosecution.
If convicted, Carroll faces a maximum penalty under federal law of five years imprisonment, supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine. Sentencing would be determined by a judge after considering federal sentencing statutes and guidelines.
It is important to note that indictments are merely allegations. Individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
