A Chicago man, Del Evans Jr., was sentenced to over 15 years in federal prison on February 26, 2025, following a guilty plea for bank robbery. This sentence comes after Evans committed a bank robbery just two months into his supervised release for previous similar offenses.

On January 22, 2024, Evans entered the Sanborn Savings Bank at around 1:00 p.m., presented a note demanding money to the teller, and fled with cash. Surveillance footage led law enforcement to identify and locate Evans' residence. Officers surrounded the house and called for him to surrender, which he did without resistance. At that time, Evans was under supervision for a series of bank robberies committed in 2014.

Evans confessed to the crime and provided details about the clothing he wore during the robbery and how he used a note as part of his method. He later destroyed this note by tearing it up and discarding it in his bathroom trash can. A search warrant executed at his home resulted in the recovery of both the clothing worn during the robbery and the torn-up note.

Evans has a history of criminal activity involving four armed robberies, four unarmed robberies, and an attempted robbery prior to this incident. His criminal record dates back to 2008 when he was first convicted of bank robbery at age 24. In 2014, at age 30, he committed three more bank robberies along with an escape attempt.

United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand sentenced Evans in Sioux City to 188 months' imprisonment with an additional consecutive sentence of 24 months for violating supervised release conditions. He is also required to pay $5,408 in restitution and will serve three years of supervised release following his prison term as there is no parole option in the federal system.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative by the Department of Justice aimed at reducing violent crime through collaboration among various stakeholders who develop strategies targeting violent offenders while supporting prevention and reentry programs.

The investigation involved multiple agencies including O’Brien County Sheriff’s Department, Sanborn Police Department, Sheldon Police Department, Hartley Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Forde Fairchild prosecuted the case.

Evans remains in custody awaiting transfer to a federal prison facility.
