A man from Canton, Minnesota, has been sentenced to over seven years in federal prison for possessing firearms as a felon and transporting a stolen vehicle across state lines. Steven Michael Current, 58, received his sentence on February 24, 2025, following his guilty plea on October 15, 2024.
Current admitted to having fifteen prior felony convictions. On September 26, 2022, he broke into a home in rural Winneshiek County and stole eight firearms. He used a stolen motorcycle to travel from Minnesota to the burglary scene in Iowa. The motorcycle was reported stolen from Rochester, Minnesota, on June 9, 2022. During the burglary, Current dropped two unscratched lottery tickets that helped identify him through images captured by a home camera system and at the store where he purchased the tickets.
United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams sentenced Current in Cedar Rapids to an imprisonment term of 87 months. He was also ordered to pay $500 in restitution to the motorcycle's original owner and $6,031.31 to the insurance company that covered the loss of the vehicle. Following his prison term, Current will serve three years of supervised release; there is no parole in the federal system.
This case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering trust within communities and supporting community-based organizations.
Current remains in custody with the United States Marshal until he is transported to a federal prison.
The prosecution was led by Assistant United States Attorney Patrick J. Reinert with investigations conducted by law enforcement agencies including Winneshiek County Sheriff's Office, Fillmore County Sheriff's Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
