A federal grand jury in Charlotte has indicted Anil Dabydeen, a 39-year-old resident of Charlotte, on charges of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The indictment is linked to an incident where Dabydeen allegedly fired at vehicles on I-485. This was announced by Lawrence J. Cameron, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.

Bennie Mims, Special Agent in Charge of the ATF's Charlotte Field Division, and Chief Johnny Jennings of the CMPD joined Cameron in announcing the indictment.

According to court documents and a criminal complaint, CMPD officers responded to reports of a shooting on January 8, 2025. Witnesses reported seeing a male driving a white Honda sedan firing at passing vehicles. Upon arrival at the scene near South Tryon Street exit on I-485, officers found two victims whose vehicle had been hit by gunfire. A witness provided video evidence showing a man identified as Dabydeen brandishing a firearm and pointing it at other cars from his stopped vehicle.

As officers investigated, they spotted the suspect's white Honda sedan speeding southbound and initiated pursuit. After stopping the vehicle, Dabydeen was arrested. During his arrest, police reportedly recovered live 9mm ammunition and a Taurus Model G3c pistol that had been reported stolen. It is alleged that Dabydeen has prior convictions for first-degree manslaughter in New York and is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.

Currently held in custody, Dabydeen faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted on charges of firearm possession by a felon.

The announcement included gratitude from Acting U.S. Attorney Cameron towards the ATF and CMPD for their investigative efforts.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Alfredo De La Rosa is handling prosecution for this case.
