A Mason City woman has been sentenced to over three years in federal prison for being a drug user in possession of firearms. Brittany Graham, 37, was sentenced on November 1, 2024, after pleading guilty on June 3, 2024, to one count of being a prohibited person in possession of firearms.
During the plea hearing, Graham admitted that she possessed four handguns in August 2022 while unlawfully using marijuana. Sentencing evidence revealed she had possessed seven handguns since 2018. Some of these firearms were later found with other prohibited individuals, including a .357 magnum revolver seized from a felon in Chicago less than seven months after her purchase.
United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand sentenced Graham to 37 months’ imprisonment and ordered her to serve a two-year term of supervised release following her prison sentence. Federal sentencing does not include parole.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative by the Department of Justice aimed at reducing violent crime through evidence-based strategies and collaboration among community stakeholders. PSN focuses on identifying and addressing pressing violent crime issues and enforces against the most violent offenders while supporting prevention and reentry programs.
The prosecution was led by Assistant United States Attorney Mark Tremmel. The investigation involved multiple agencies including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the Mason City Police Department; the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office; and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
