The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) recently presented its stance on several legislative issues in Washington State. The organization opposed Senate Bill 5062, which involves the Childcare Standards Board, as well as the House version previously. NFIB also suggested modifications to Senate Bill 5217 regarding pregnancy accommodation laws, advocating for a delay in implementation until January 1, 2026, and recommending that enforcement be transferred to the Department of Labor & Industries.
Additionally, NFIB testified against granting unemployment insurance benefits to striking workers. The organization argued that such a measure would likely lead to increased unemployment insurance taxes for small businesses not involved in strikes due to the social tax component of the system.
On Wednesday morning, NFIB voiced opposition to House Bill 1308, which proposes allowing workers to sue employers over delays or failures in providing personnel files within 21 days. NFIB recommended an administrative remedy through the Department of Labor & Industries instead of legal action.
The organization is currently monitoring around 75 bills that could affect small businesses if passed. Upcoming committee hearings include discussions on several priority bills where NFIB has taken positions either supporting or opposing them.
One bill supported by NFIB is Senate Bill 5408 concerning wage and salary disclosure corrections. According to NFIB, this bill addresses issues with class action lawsuits against employers over job posting errors found by websites like Indeed.
In contrast, NFIB opposes House Bill 1430 related to reimbursement rates for advanced practice registered nurses and physician assistants. The organization argues it would lead to higher medical costs passed on through increased insurance premiums and out-of-pocket expenses.
NFIB supports House Bill 1483 regarding the right-to-repair digital electronics but opposes Senate Bill 5043 concerning industrial insurance coverage for posttraumatic stress disorders affecting correctional facility workers due to potential financial implications on existing reserves.
