United States Attorney Delia L. Smith announced that Jahmar Frederick, 31, from St. Croix, has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm following previous felony convictions.
Court documents reveal that on May 11, 2024, Virgin Islands Police Officers attempted to stop Frederick after he was seen driving a Ford F-150 without a license plate. Frederick fled but eventually lost control of the vehicle and slid off the road. He then put on a ski mask and tried to escape on foot but was caught by officers. A loaded Glock Model 22 Gen4 .40 Caliber firearm was found in his possession upon arrest. Frederick has prior felony convictions for obtaining money by false pretenses in 2023 and forgery in 2018. If convicted of the current charge, he could face up to 15 years in prison. The final sentence will be determined by a district court judge considering U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other factors.
The case is being investigated by the Virgin Islands Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations, with Assistant United States Attorney Daniel H. Huston prosecuting it. This effort is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative aimed at addressing violent crime through collaboration among federal, state, local, tribal law enforcement officials, prosecutors, and community leaders.
United States Attorney Smith reminds everyone that "a criminal complaint is merely an allegation," emphasizing that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt in court.
