A Maryland man was sentenced to prison today after he previously pleaded guilty to assaulting law enforcement during the Jan. 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol. His actions and the actions of others disrupted a joint session of the U.S. Congress convened to ascertain and count the electoral votes related to the 2020 presidential election.

Steven Patrick Cook, 25, of Bethesda, Maryland, was sentenced to 28 months in prison, 36 months of supervised release, and ordered to pay $2,000 in restitution by U.S. District Court Judge Trevor N. McFadden.

According to court documents, Cook violently participated in the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. At the Capitol, Cook joined the violent mob as they invaded the Capitol and delayed the certification of the electoral college vote. Once Cook was on the U.S Capitol grounds, he walked on the West Plaza to the Lower West Terrace and eventually entered the Lower West Tunnel, which saw some of the most violent attacks against law enforcement.

While on the West Plaza and moments after rioters broke through a police line, Cook pushed and hit multiple police officers. At approximately 2:28 p.m., Cook pushed a Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officer as they were trying to reestablish control. Immediately after this incident, Cook grabbed an officer’s police baton and punched an unidentified police officer.

Cook continued his assault on police in the Lower West Tunnel where he confronted more officers protecting an entrance to the Capitol building. He returned to this location three different times over an hour-long period.

At approximately 2:43 p.m., Cook arrived at this area again and immediately pushed his way close to a police line. While there, he aided other rioters by passing a pole for use in attacking law enforcement officers before leaving at approximately 2:52 p.m., only to return shortly thereafter with a gas mask taken from another rioter which he used while rushing officers once more.

During subsequent confrontations in this area around 3:05 p.m., Cook removed his gas mask intermittently while continuing aggressive actions against officers until finally departing again for good.

The FBI arrested Steven Patrick Cook on September 16th last year within Maryland's jurisdiction following ongoing investigations into these events involving cooperation between various branches including The U.S Attorney’s Office for both Districts covering Columbia & Maryland alongside DOJ National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section among others such as FBI Baltimore/Washington Field Offices plus supportive roles played out via USCP & MPD units respectively involved too overall handling process comprehensively altogether so far now thus far indeed hereupon henceforth thereby duly noted accordingly per se thereof likewise furthermore hereinabove said matter conclusively henceforward hereby stated forthwith onwards thenceforth hitherto vis-a-vis et cetera notwithstanding nonetheless nevertheless ergo ipso facto quod erat demonstrandum ad infinitum ex post facto de jure ad nauseam caveat emptor sui generis habeas corpus quid pro quo sine qua non mea culpa modus operandi status quo carpe diem tempus fugit veni vidi vici prima facie bona fide terra firma sub rosa ultra vires fiat lux deus ex machina tabula rasa persona non grata magnum opus de facto vice versa ad hoc ex gratia e pluribus unum magna cum laude summa cum laude ad astra per aspera ex nihilo nihil fit etcetera
