Proven technology helps reduce potential for collisions
LACEY – A congestion-relieving tool is set to help southbound Interstate 5 travelers in Lacey. The Washington State Department of Transportation will soon activate a new ramp meter at the Marvin Road on-ramp to southbound I-5. The ramp meter is scheduled to turn on Monday, Aug. 1.
Traveler benefits
Ramp meters regulate the flow of traffic entering the highway and provide consistent gaps between vehicles. The even pace makes it more predicable for travelers using I-5 and makes merging smoother for all travelers by reducing the number of vehicles merging at the same time.
The on-ramp traffic signals operate using real-time traffic conditions. WSDOT will fine tune ramp meter operations and closely monitor traffic flow. WSDOT’s goal is to balance the needs of drivers merging onto the highway with the needs of drivers already there.
The ramp meter joins a suite of other southbound I-5 meters that were previously installed between Martin Way East in Lacey and Henderson Boulevard Southeast in Olympia.
