U.S. Representative Jaime Herrera Beutler (WA-3) issued the following announcement on April 1
Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler announced today that she has co-sponsored H.R. 6407, a bill to rescind the $25 million in funding for the Kennedy Center – a concert hall located in Washington, D.C., set to receive the funding via the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
It was reported this week that hours after the CARES Act was signed into law that included the $25 million bailout, all members of the National Symphony Orchestra who perform at the Kennedy Center were told that their paychecks would stop at the end of the week.
“It was critical we passed the CARES Act to rush direct relief to folks in Southwest Washington and bolster our health workers on the front lines who are treating patients and containing this virus. But a global pandemic is not an excuse to send millions in taxpayer dollars to non-virus related items – especially a concert hall in Washington, D.C. that chooses not to use its $25 million to protect workers’ livelihoods,” Herrera Beutler said. “If there are additional opportunities to save taxpayer dollars when they’re not being used to provide urgent relief to those impacted by this disaster, I’ll take them.”
