On April 15, 2025, Senior United States District Judge William C. Griesbach sentenced John D. Taylor to eight years in prison followed by five years of supervised release. Taylor, aged 37, pled guilty to charges related to trafficking firearms, including machineguns, without a license, as well as possessing firearms and machineguns in furtherance of drug trafficking.

Previously, on November 22, 2024, Judge Griesbach sentenced Allison A. Mundt, Taylor's co-defendant, to seven years in prison and five years of supervised release. Mundt, aged 31, also pled guilty to similar charges involving firearm trafficking without a license and possession of firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking.

Law enforcement investigations in March and April 2024 revealed that Taylor and Mundt, previous felons residing in Waushara County, were involved in selling firearms. Controlled purchases led to a search warrant that uncovered 35 firearms, including machineguns, short-barrel rifles, and pistols, with some lacking serial numbers. Authorities also found drum magazines, over 1,700 rounds of ammunition, and methamphetamine intended for distribution.

Judge Griesbach emphasized the dangers of dealing firearms without licenses, highlighting the increased risk of firearms landing in the hands of felons and other restricted individuals. The court noted the heightened danger posed by the involvement of machineguns and high-capacity firearms. Furthermore, both defendants were previously convicted felons engaged in methamphetamine distribution.

The case was investigated by the Waushara County Sheriff’s Department, Lake Winnebago Area Metropolitan Enforcement Group Drug Unit, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Timothy Funnel prosecuted the case.
