A Clairton, Pennsylvania resident has admitted guilt in a federal court to wire fraud charges, according to Acting United States Attorney Troy Rivetti. Tracey Smith, 56, entered her guilty plea to four counts before United States District Judge Cathy Bissoon.

The court was informed that in 2023, Smith took on the role of comptroller at a Pittsburgh engineering firm. During her tenure, she embezzled company funds by issuing additional payroll checks to herself, making unauthorized transactions with company credit cards, and falsifying expense reports. The total amount embezzled was approximately $673,556.80.

Judge Bissoon has set the sentencing date for July 17, 2025. The law stipulates a possible sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 per count. However, the actual sentence will depend on the severity of the offense and any prior criminal history of the defendant.

Assistant United States Attorney Gregory C. Melucci is handling the prosecution for this case on behalf of the government. The investigation leading to Smith's prosecution was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
