A man from Euclid, Ohio, was sentenced to 30 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud. The sentencing took place on March 11, 2025, as announced by Acting United States Attorney Troy Rivetti.

Kevin Carney, aged 63, received the sentence from United States District Judge Robert J. Colville. The case involved Carney and his associates Robert Irey (deceased) and Jonathan Freeze who operated a company named Alternative Energy Holdings, LLC (AEH). They misled investors by claiming that AEH would construct a plant to convert biodegradable waste into green energy. Investors were offered short-term loans with high interest rates and potential ownership interests in AEH.

Instead of using the funds for business expenses as promised, Carney and his co-conspirators divided the money among themselves for personal use such as gambling and luxury purchases. The fraudulent activities occurred between June 2016 and April 2018, affecting over 20 victims who collectively lost around $2 million.

Irey and Freeze also pleaded guilty to similar charges; Freeze's sentencing is scheduled for May 2025.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Lee J. Karl and Heidi M. Grogan. Acting United States Attorney Rivetti praised the efforts of the United States Postal Inspection Service and Federal Bureau of Investigation in securing Carney's conviction.
