Devin Devaun, a 26-year-old resident of Washington D.C., has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. The sentence was delivered by U.S. District Court Judge Tanya S. Chutkan after Devaun was found guilty during a stipulated facts bench trial on November 15, 2024.
The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin, Jr. and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). In addition to the prison term, Devaun will serve three years of supervised release following his incarceration.
Court documents reveal that on December 17, 2023, members of the MPD’s Violent Crimes Suppression Division’s Robbery Suppression Unit were patrolling Georgia Avenue corridor in response to a series of robberies in the area. A "be on the lookout for" alert had been issued regarding one such robbery.
At approximately 12:10 a.m., officers noticed a group jaywalking across Georgia Avenue NW at Longfellow Street NW, who matched the description from the alert. An officer observed one individual with an unusual rectangular-shaped object protruding from his groin area. As officers approached, this individual attempted to flee but was apprehended after tripping while running.
Upon detaining him, officers discovered a .357 caliber revolver loaded with six rounds inside his right pants leg. The defendant was prohibited from possessing firearms due to prior felony convictions: robbery in 2016 and unlawful possession of firearms in both 2017 and 2021.
The case investigation was conducted by MPD’s Violent Crimes Suppression Division’s Robbery Suppression Unit and is being prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Monica Svetoslavov with assistance from former Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle Mirabelli.
