The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) expressed gratitude to its members who attended the Small Business Day in Olympia on February 4, despite challenging weather conditions. The event saw small-business owners navigate hail, sleet, ice, and snow to engage with policymakers at the State Capitol.
Participants addressed pressing legislative issues impacting small businesses. Among the topics discussed were potential solutions for a $12 billion budget deficit without introducing new taxes. This session was presented by Senator Chris Gildon, ranking member of the Senate Ways & Means Committee.
Senate Republican Leader John Braun offered insights into the Republican response to Governor Bob Ferguson and Democrat supermajorities. Patrick Connor, NFIB Washington State Director, outlined small business legislative priorities. Ingrid Ulrey, CEO of Washington Health Benefit Exchange, discussed health insurance options for small businesses. Representative Andrew Barkis emphasized the need for more small business owners in the Legislature.
Attendees also considered a new proposal to increase the minimum wage to $25 and were encouraged to express their opinions through an Action Alert directed at legislators.
NFIB Washington acknowledged Larson Financial Group and Rock Point Oyster as sponsors of this year's event and thanked all participants for overcoming adverse weather conditions to contribute to discussions on critical issues facing Main Street businesses.
