A Cedar Rapids resident, Brogan Eugene McCartney, aged 22, has been sentenced to over five years in federal prison. The sentencing took place on January 15, 2025, following his guilty plea on July 29, 2024. McCartney faced charges including conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance and distribution of a controlled substance.
Court documents revealed that between January and early March of 2023, McCartney acquired at least 900 fentanyl pills from a supplier. He then distributed these pills to various individuals. On March 4, emergency responders found a woman deceased from a fentanyl overdose at McCartney's residence in Cedar Rapids. Despite this incident, he continued distributing the drug.
On August 7, law enforcement used an undercover officer to buy fentanyl pills from McCartney. During the transaction, McCartney displayed what appeared to be a firearm but was later identified as a BB gun. Further interactions with the undercover officer occurred on August 23 and September 6 when more fentanyl pills were purchased from him.
The sentencing was carried out by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams in Cedar Rapids. In addition to the prison term of 63 months, McCartney will serve three years of supervised release post-incarceration. There is no parole available in the federal system.
Currently held by the United States Marshal’s custody, McCartney awaits transfer to a federal prison facility.
Assistant United States Attorney Dillan Edwards prosecuted the case with investigations conducted by multiple agencies including the Johnson County Drug Enforcement Task Force and other local police departments alongside the Drug Enforcement Administration.
