A federal grand jury in Puerto Rico has indicted Ángel Javier Avilés-Monzón, also known as "Chimi/Yovngchimi," on two counts of firearms violations. The indictment was returned on December 12, 2024, and Avilés-Monzón was arrested by FBI special agents at the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport.

Court documents reveal that Avilés-Monzón allegedly possessed a machine gun on June 4, 2023, and August 25, 2024. The firearm in question is described as a pistol of unknown make and model that had been modified to fire automatically more than one shot without manually reloading by a single function of the trigger.

If found guilty, Avilés-Monzón could face up to ten years in prison for each count. A federal district court judge will decide the sentence based on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other legal factors.

The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney W. Stephen Muldrow from the District of Puerto Rico and Joseph González, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI San Juan Field Office.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Alberto López-Rocafort, Chief of the Gang Section, along with Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Russell.

It is important to note that an indictment is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
