A man from Waterloo, Iowa, has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison after pointing a firearm at a police officer shortly after his release from federal custody. Daytrell Washington-Roby, 26, pleaded guilty on July 1, 2024, to possession of ammunition by a felon and was sentenced on December 2, 2024.
Washington-Roby had previously been convicted for possession of a firearm by a user of a controlled substance and served time in federal prison starting January 2020. He was released on December 22, 2023. On February 18, 2024, authorities were alerted by a concerned citizen who reported an incident involving Washington-Roby choking a woman in a car. When approached by law enforcement in response to the call, Washington-Roby pointed a firearm at an officer before discarding it into the backyard of a nearby residence. The weapon was identified as an un-serialized "ghost gun."
At the time of this incident, Washington-Roby was under federal supervised release. United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams presided over the sentencing in Cedar Rapids. Washington-Roby received a sentence of 60 months for his recent offense and an additional consecutive term of 24 months for violating his previous supervised release conditions related to his prior firearms case. Following his imprisonment, he will be subject to three years of supervised release; parole is not available within the federal system.
Currently held in the custody of the United States Marshal’s Service, Washington-Roby awaits transfer to a federal prison facility.
This prosecution falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which seeks to reduce violent crime and enhance community safety through collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies and communities. In May 2021, PSN's strategy was reinforced with principles focusing on community trust and strategic enforcement priorities.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kyndra Lundquist with investigations conducted by a Federal Task Force including the Waterloo Police Department, FBI, Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms alongside assistance from Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office and Cedar Falls Police Department.
