A man from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has been sentenced to over two years in federal prison following his escape from a residential reentry center. Caleb Lee Olson, 49, was serving the remainder of his sentence for a previous escape in 2020 when he left the Gerald R. Hinzman Center without permission on November 27, 2023.

Olson's guilty plea was entered on May 15, 2024. He admitted to escaping while under the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons and failing to return to the facility. Authorities located him in Marion, Iowa, leading to his arrest on December 5, 2023.

United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams sentenced Olson in Cedar Rapids. Olson received a prison term of 33 months and will serve an additional three-year supervised release period after completing his sentence. It is noted that there is no parole available within the federal system.

Currently held by the United States Marshal’s custody, Olson awaits transportation to a federal prison.

The prosecution was led by Assistant United States Attorney Patrick J. Reinert with investigations conducted by the United States Marshals Service and the Northern Iowa Fugitive Task Force.
