A Chilton County man has been sentenced to 25 years in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm. Acting United States Attorney Kevin Davidson announced the sentencing of Alvin Lee McCary, aged 57, who was found guilty by a jury in March. On October 23, 2024, a federal judge ordered McCary to serve 300 months in prison. Federal inmates are not eligible for parole.
Court records and trial evidence revealed that on July 22, 2020, McCary was involved in an argument at a residence in Clanton, Alabama. The situation escalated when McCary retrieved a shotgun and shot the victim before fleeing the scene. Investigators later discovered a shotgun and ammunition at the bottom of a well near McCary's property. Due to previous felony convictions, McCary is prohibited by federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition.
The case was prosecuted under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. The Department of Justice revitalized PSN in 2017 to focus on targeting violent criminals and developing local strategies to reduce crime.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office conducted the investigation. Assistant United States Attorneys Mark E. Andreu and Ashley J. Avera led the prosecution.
