Tyrell Braxton, a 25-year-old resident of Denver, has been found guilty by a federal grand jury for being a felon in possession of ammunition. The conviction follows an incident on August 19, 2023, when gunshots were reported at the intersection of 28th and Welton in Denver.
Surveillance footage revealed Braxton displaying a firearm hours before the shooting occurred. The video showed him confronting another man before firing six shots, resulting in the man's death and injuries to two women nearby. Additional gunfire from others present led to a second fatality. Law enforcement recovered 71 shell casings from eight different firearms at the scene. Braxton fled but was later apprehended. At the time, he was on federal supervised release for a prior firearm possession offense, having been released from prison in April 2023.
"Violent criminals have no place on our streets," stated Acting United States Attorney for the District of Colorado Matt Kirsch. "Our office works hard to hold repeat offenders accountable for their actions, and I am grateful for the dedicated support of our local law enforcement partners."
Sentencing is scheduled for January 29, 2025. United States District Court Judge R. Brooke Jackson presided over the trial. The investigation was conducted by the Denver Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Celeste Rangel and Special Assistant United States Attorney Leah Perczak prosecuted the case.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities.
