The Washington Huskies lost their final regular season baseball game to top-ranked UCLA, 6-1, according to a May 16 announcement.
The loss concludes the Huskies’ regular season with a record of 23 wins and 31 losses overall, and a conference record of 12-18 in Big Ten play. As a result, Washington is set as the No. 11 seed for the upcoming Big Ten Tournament and will face Ohio State at 7 p.m. Pacific Time on Tuesday, May 19.
In the matchup against UCLA, Washington gave up four runs in the first inning. The team’s only run came in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Spear. Pitchers Jay Miller, Cooper McBride, and Peysen Sweeney combined for seven innings on the mound during which they allowed six hits, two runs, one walk, and recorded eight strikeouts.
Miller delivered his strongest performance of the year by pitching four innings with just one run allowed while striking out five batters. McBride made his season debut against UCLA by throwing two and one-third innings with two hits surrendered, one run allowed, three strikeouts and no walks. Nolan Rowe also made his debut for Washington as a pinch runner before finishing the game at catcher.
The Huskies will next compete in the Big Ten Tournament beginning Tuesday evening against Ohio State.
