Research from the Foundation for the Restoration of America shows Washington as a top state provider of chemical abortion while the procedure poses serious health risks, with more than 1 in 10 women in Illinois experiencing severe complications.

A new study from the Foundation for the Restoration of America shows the data on the risks of chemical abortion, with more than 1 in 10 women experiencing serious health complications after using the mifepristone pill, a rate 22 times higher than the FDA’s reported figures. In 2023, Washington was among the top contributors to chemical abortions in the nation.

The report analyzed insurance claims data from 2017 to 2023, and found that 11.2% of chemical abortions in 2023 led to serious adverse events, including hospitalization, infection, and hemorrhaging.

Despite the growing prevalence of chemical abortions in Washington, public health officials have downplayed these risks, the report said, with some sources claiming that complications are “extremely rare.” The data indicates an upward trend in adverse event rates over the years, with the most significant increase in 2022 and 2023. Washington, a state with a high rate of chemical abortions, is among those most affected by these safety concerns.

Foundation for the Restoration of America is a nonprofit organization “dedicated to educating Americans that the principles of our nation’s founding should continue to serve as the foundation for our future,” according to the group’s website.
