President Trump is developing a distinct approach to populism that positions him as both an advocate for workers and a protector of business interests. His administration has made moves that sometimes support labor over corporations, while at other times aligning with the priorities of large companies.
Abigail Ball, executive director at American Compass, commented on the current political landscape: “While the Old Right has lost a lot of ground, its arguments are still potent with many elected Republicans,” Ball told Axios.
She added, “On issues like tariffs, the administration has shown a willingness to choose long-term American interests over short-term business interests, but there remain areas where charismatic business leaders are winning the argument, at the expense of America’s economic and national security.”
The ongoing debate reflects internal divisions within Republican ranks regarding economic strategy and priorities. Some policymakers continue to draw from traditional conservative ideas, while others endorse Trump’s blend of worker advocacy and corporate protection.
