A Rocky Mount man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for firearm possession related to drug trafficking and bribery of a public official. Quatavious Arnez Hunter, 32, pleaded guilty on October 8, 2024.
Court documents revealed that on September 16, 2021, Rocky Mount Police Department officers stopped a vehicle with Hunter as a passenger. He was found with a loaded handgun, over $1,500 in cash, heroin bindles, crack cocaine, and powder cocaine.
While awaiting trial in March 2023 at Bladen County Jail (BCJ), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) investigated claims that Hunter and another inmate were paying a BCJ officer for smuggling drugs into the jail. A search of Hunter's cell uncovered contraband including synthetic marijuana. The investigation showed that payments were made via Cash App by Hunter’s girlfriend to the officer who admitted delivering contraband.
Daniel P. Bubar, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina announced the sentencing by U.S. District Judge James C. Dever III. The Rocky Mount Police Department and Nash County Sheriff’s Office handled the initial drug and gun offenses investigation while ATF and Bladen County Sheriff’s Office investigated the contraband case. Assistant United States Attorneys Sarah E. Nokes and Ashley H. Foxx prosecuted.
