Angel Enrique Suncar and Tristan Miles Ware, members of the Kennedy Street Crew in Washington D.C., were sentenced for their involvement in a large-scale drug trafficking operation. Suncar received a 60-month federal prison sentence after pleading guilty to possessing a firearm during a drug trafficking crime. He will also serve five years of supervised release. Ware was sentenced to 120 months for conspiracy to distribute over 100 kilograms of marijuana and possession of a firearm during a drug trafficking offense, with an additional five years of supervised release.
The sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves, along with representatives from the FBI, DEA, ATF, and IRS Criminal Investigation offices in Washington D.C.
Court documents revealed that KDY operated open-air drug markets on Kennedy Street and surrounding areas in Northwest Washington D.C., arming themselves to protect their territory from rival gangs. Suncar's role included selling drugs like marijuana and cocaine base while being armed, as evidenced by law enforcement's recovery of narcotics, cash, and firearms at his residence.
Ware was arrested with co-defendants at another location where law enforcement found marijuana, cash, and firearms. A prior encounter involved him with other KDY members suspected of smuggling drugs into the area.
The investigation was part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force initiative which targets high-level criminal organizations using collaborative efforts from multiple agencies.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Matthew W. Kinskey and Sitara Witanachchi are prosecuting the case as part of efforts to reduce violence and trafficking offenses in the District of Columbia.
