Today is Women’s Equality Day! This day was created to celebrate the importance of the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote*.
It’s also a day to reflect on what we still need to do towards gender equity. On this day, we also acknowledge the tremendous work being done towards furthering gender equality throughout the state. An important part of this work is promoting equitable and accessible sexual and reproductive healthcare. *The 19th amendment didn’t give all women the right to vote. Especially for poor, immigrant, Black, Native American, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, and/or Asian American women, they continued to face legal and social barriers that kept them from voting for another four decades.
