U.S. Representative Suzan DelBene (WA-1) issued the following announcement on April 3.
Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) called on the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to extend the May 15, 2020 tax filing and payment deadline for tax-exempt organizations, such as nonprofits, hospitals, and universities. 33 members of Congress joined DelBene in sending a letter the IRS urging these changes.
The IRS recently provided a 90-day income tax filing and payment extension for individuals and corporations in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. That extension did not cover several tax-exempt organizations. These organizations are still expected to file these returns and pay any taxes or excise dues by the current deadline.
Many tax-exempt organizations are actively involved in the response to COVID-19 by treating patients, providing nutritional assistance, running testing facilities, and more. Additionally, recent legislative changes to the tax code will make filing by the May 15 deadline more cumbersome.
“There are several new tax-related changes in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which will make calculating any taxes due exceedingly challenging for tax-exempt organizations such as nonprofit hospitals and universities,” DelBene says in a letter to the IRS. “Just like businesses, these organizations have experienced significant financial disruption as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
