Sounders FC defeated the first-place San Jose Earthquakes 3-2 on May 15 at Lumen Field. Albert Rusnák, Jesús Ferreira, and Osaze De Rosario scored for Seattle, with De Rosario netting the match-winner in the 89th minute. The victory secured the Heritage Cup for Seattle after sweeping San Jose this season.
The result moved Sounders FC into third place in the Western Conference with 21 points and extended their unbeaten streak in league play to nine matches. The club is now responsible for both of San Jose’s losses this season.
Rusnák scored his fifth goal of the season across all competitions, while Ferreira tallied his second of the year in Major League Soccer play. De Rosario’s late goal was also his second of the MLS campaign. Nouhou and Cristian Roldan assisted on De Rosario’s winner; it marked Roldan’s fourth assist this season and his 76th career assist for Seattle, which is second most in club history.
Seattle’s home unbeaten streak reached a club-record 22 matches (16 wins, six draws), while its regular-season home unbeaten run is now tied for its longest at 14 games (10 wins, four draws). Attendance at Lumen Field was reported as 28,726 with partly cloudy weather conditions.
Head Coach Brian Schmetzer’s team will conclude its three-match homestand against LA Galaxy on Saturday.
