A Seattle man with a history of criminal convictions was sentenced to four and a half years in federal prison for illegal firearm possession, according to an announcement from Acting U.S. Attorney Teal Luthy Miller. Kenan Dejuan Brown, 42, was arrested on October 20, 2023, after crashing his vehicle into a tree and being found unconscious with a gun in his jacket pocket.
At the sentencing hearing in U.S. District Court in Seattle, Judge James L. Robart addressed Brown’s statement about feeling safer with a firearm by saying, “In my experience a gun is an invitation to get into trouble.”
Court records indicate that police responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting that a car had left the roadway and struck a tree. Officers found Brown behind the wheel and initially attempted to speak with him before he lost consciousness. They observed the handle of a gun protruding from his pocket and recovered a Glock 19 pistol with an extended magazine and one round chambered.
Brown has previous convictions in King and Kitsap Superior Courts for domestic violence assaults, violations of court orders, and unlawful possession of firearms. He also has a prior federal conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Brown pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm on February 14, 2025.
Judge Robart ordered that Brown receive drug and alcohol treatment as part of his sentence. After serving his prison term, Brown will be subject to three years of supervised release.
The case was investigated by the Seattle Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). Assistant United States Attorney Brian Wynne prosecuted the case.
