David Alan Miles, a 31-year-old resident of Perry, Florida, has pleaded guilty in federal court to the charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The announcement was made by John P. Heekin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida.
U.S. Attorney Heekin stated: “I applaud the excellent work of the state, local, and federal partners to make our community safer by getting this dangerous individual off the streets. My office remains fully committed to aggressively prosecuting those who put others at risk, fulfilling the promise made by President Donald J. Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi to Take Back America by targeting criminals with the full force of the law.”
According to court documents, Miles was arrested on February 7, 2025. Authorities say he initially fled from police during a high-speed chase before escaping on foot and later claiming he had been carjacked. A canine team from Taylor Correctional Institution assisted in tracking down the supposed carjacker, which led officers to Miles’ mother’s residence. Miles admitted to fleeing because he had a rifle in his vehicle and knew he was prohibited from possessing firearms due to his status as a convicted felon.
Miles has seven prior felony convictions and previously served time in federal prison for possession of an unregistered short-barreled shotgun and for selling a firearm to another convicted felon.
He now faces up to 15 years in prison.
The investigation involved cooperation between the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), with support from both the Perry Police Department and the Florida Department of Corrections. Assistant United States Attorney James A. McCain is prosecuting the case.
Sentencing is set for October 2, 2025 at 10:00 am at the United States Courthouse in Tallahassee before United States District Judge Mark E. Walker.
This prosecution falls under Operation Take Back America (https://www.justice.gov/dag/media/1393746/dl?inline), an initiative that coordinates resources from agencies such as Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN) within the Department of Justice to address violent crime, illegal immigration issues, and criminal organizations nationwide.
