Margaret “Meg” Heap was sworn in as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia on August 18, 2025. The ceremony was held at the United States Courthouse in Augusta and the oath was administered by U.S. District Judge J. Randal Hall. Heap’s appointment as interim U.S. Attorney became effective on the same day, following her selection by Attorney General Pamela Bondi.
“I am incredibly honored to serve as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia,” said U.S. Attorney Heap. “I look forward to working with our partners in law enforcement to make this a safer place to live and raise our children.”
Prior to this role, Heap served as Chairman and Vice Chair of Georgia’s State Board of Pardons and Paroles after being appointed by Governor Brian Kemp in January 2021. Her legal career began in 1986 as a Volunteer Coordinator and Victim Advocate with the Chatham County District Attorney’s Victim-Witness Assistance Program. She earned her Juris Doctor from Mercer University Law School in 1992 and then worked as an Assistant District Attorney in the Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit, prosecuting felonies in both Superior and Juvenile Court.
From 1995 through 2010, Heap worked as an Assistant District Attorney for the Eastern Judicial Circuit before serving two terms as its District Attorney. During her tenure, she was recognized as “2019 District Attorney of the Year” by the District Attorneys’ Association of Georgia.
As U.S. Attorney, Heap will oversee federal law enforcement efforts across 43 counties within southern Georgia, including major cities such as Savannah, Augusta, and Brunswick. The district serves over 1.6 million residents and is supported by a staff of about 70 attorneys and employees who prosecute federal crimes and represent the government in civil matters brought before U.S. District Court.
