The Seattle Mariners defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 11-9 on April 25, following a late-game rally at Busch Stadium.
The game was marked by several lead changes and strong performances from both teams. The Mariners overcame deficits in both the third and seventh innings to secure their first road series victory of the season.
Manager Dan Wilson said, “We don’t panic. We just continue to put together good at-bats and try to crawl our way back in the game.” The Mariners’ approach included stealing four bases, drawing timely walks, executing a bunt single in the ninth inning, and maintaining consistent offensive pressure throughout the lineup.
Julio Rodríguez described the team’s strategy as “kind of a pass-the-baton mentality. Just do your job and pass it to the next guy.” This team-oriented approach led to key contributions from players across the roster. Connor Joe tied the game in the eighth inning with a two-run single off the bench, while Leo Rivas delivered a go-ahead two-run single in the ninth. Rivas said after his crucial hit, “I was just trying to be simple. Put the ball in play.” Wilson added about Rivas’s performance: “That’s what this team is all about. They love each other, and to see him come through there, everybody felt that.”
Despite starting pitcher Bryan Woo allowing four home runs over three innings—his shortest outing since his Major League Baseball debut—the bullpen stabilized Seattle’s defense with scoreless innings from Jose Ferrer and Matt Brash. Woo acknowledged his struggles but credited his teammates for supporting him: “I sucked today,” he said. “But the offense picked me up. That’s baseball.” Andrés Muñoz closed out the ninth inning with a strikeout followed by a double play.
Rodríguez summed up Seattle’s resilient identity after their first road series win: “That’s who we are,” he said. “We’re never out of the game.”
