Shota Yamamoto, a 29-year-old resident of Tokyo, Japan, was sentenced on June 2 in federal court in Honolulu to 12 months and one day in prison for conspiring to export firearm components and tactical accessories from the United States to Japan without the required licenses. Yamamoto pled guilty on January 22 and is expected to be deported upon completion of his sentence.

According to court records, between March 2024 and July 2025, Yamamoto conspired with another individual to send firearm parts and tactical accessories from the United States using an address in Hawaii. The items were intended for retrofitting airsoft equipment for enthusiasts in Japan who sought highly realistic gear. Airsoft is a recreational activity involving replica firearms that fire non-metallic pellets.

Yamamoto arranged shipments from U.S. dealers and then exported them either by carrying them in checked luggage or through commercial shipping companies. He admitted exporting or attempting to export over 900 components—including AR-15 lower receiver parts kits, upper receivers, magazines, and similar items—each requiring an export license he did not possess.

“The unlawful export of firearm components endangers the public and presents a significant national security threat,” said United States Attorney Ken Sorenson. Sorenson also said, “Yamamoto’s sentence and expected deportation should serve as a stern warning that this conduct will not be tolerated. The protection of our country is paramount, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, together with our law enforcement partners, will devote significant resources to investigating and prosecuting these cases.”

Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent in Charge Lucy Cabral-DeArmas said, “The sentencing sends a clear message: Homeland Security Investigations will not tolerate the illegal export of firearm components that threaten public safety and national security. HSI remains committed to working with our partners to investigate and disrupt these criminal networks, and to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.” Homeland Security Investigations along with the U.S. Department of Commerce – Bureau of Industry and Security investigated the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael F. Albanese prosecuted the case.
