The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Edgar Velasquez-Ortiz, a Salvadoran national convicted of attempted robbery in the District of Columbia.

DHS said Velasquez-Ortiz was among individuals arrested during an operation targeting people the agency described as “criminal illegal aliens.” The department said Velasquez-Ortiz had been convicted of attempted robbery in Washington, D.C.

The arrest was included in a DHS announcement about ICE operations involving people with convictions for murder, sexual offenses, robbery, and other crimes. DHS described the enforcement effort as part of its “Worst of the Worst” operation focused on public safety.

ICE reported that law enforcement partners arrested 189 people during a four-day operation in Washington, D.C. The agency said the operation focused on individuals with criminal histories and immigration violations.

ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations identifies, arrests, and removes noncitizens who are subject to removal from the United States. The agency says ERO also manages detained and non-detained cases and works with federal, state, and local law enforcement partners.

The Department of Homeland Security says U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is responsible for immigration enforcement and related federal law enforcement activities through offices across the country.
