Holland America Line and Princess announced on May 19 a key leadership transition within their Alaska government affairs team, with Ralph Samuels set to retire as vice president of government affairs effective June 2, 2026. Micaela Fowler will succeed him in the role.
The announcement marks a significant shift for Carnival Corporation’s combined land operations business in Alaska and Yukon, which supports both Holland America and Princess Cruises. The leadership change is notable due to Samuels’ nearly 18 years of service building relationships across federal, state, and local stakeholders.
Robert Morgenstern, senior vice president of Alaska operations, said: “Ralph’s steady leadership, integrity and deep understanding of our industry have left a lasting mark on our business. We are grateful for his many contributions and wish him the very best in a well-earned retirement.”
Fowler joined the organization one year ago as director of southeast Alaska government and community relations after serving as Alaska’s Deputy Commissioner of Commerce. Since then she has played an important role on the government affairs team through her policy expertise and community engagement. Morgenstern said: “Micaela has quickly become a trusted voice for Alaska and Yukon operations for Holland America and Princess. She is well positioned to build on the strong foundation Ralph established and to continue our strong partnership in the state of Alaska.”
Holland America Line approaches its 80th year exploring Alaska while supporting land-based experiences such as Denali Lodge near Denali National Park, Skagway Inn, Dawson City Inn in Yukon, with an expansion at Denali Lodge planned for completion in 2027. The company collaborates closely with local communities to reinforce its commitment to the region.
Princess Cruises operates five lodges across Alaska—including Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge—and provides rail services connecting guests from ship to shore while partnering with local communities to support sustainable tourism.
