Gonzaga Baseball extended its winning streak to fourteen games with a 14-8 win over Loyola Marymount University, according to an April 26 announcement.
The victory allowed Gonzaga to sweep the series against LMU and maintain strong momentum as the season progresses. The team now holds a record of 27-14 overall and 15-3 in conference play.
Ryder Young led the Bulldogs offensively, scoring four runs and collecting three runs batted in. Young went three for four at the plate, including a three-run home run in the fourth inning that set a new career high for runs scored and tied Gonzaga’s season high. “Young set a new career high in runs scored and tied the season high for the Zags,” according to the team’s statement.
The Bulldogs started quickly, scoring three runs in the first inning. Maddox Haley hit a ground rule double that drove in Mikey Bell, followed by Hudson Shupe bringing home two more with a single. Gonzaga has won all eleven games this season when scoring in the first inning and is now 17-2 when notching the game’s first run.
LMU responded with three runs of their own in the second inning, capitalizing on both a balk and wild pitch. Finbar O’Brien managed to escape further trouble by leaving runners stranded on second and third base. The Bulldogs regained control with another run in the third before expanding their lead through multi-run innings—including Haley’s tenth home run of the year—a two-run shot matching Young’s earlier effort at 399 feet.
Five different players hit doubles during Sunday’s game as Gonzaga piled up five multi-run innings overall. The team has now swept its last three weekend series and won seven consecutive series heading into an upcoming matchup against nineteenth-ranked Oregon on Tuesday.
