Four Mexican nationals appeared in court in Las Vegas on April 6 to face charges of illegally reentering the United States after being previously deported. Laurentino Salvador Juarez-Martinez, Serguio Raudel Contreras-Torres, Brandon Castanon-Bautista, and Pablo Covarrubias-Islas are each charged with one count of deported alien found in the United States. Preliminary hearings are set for April 20 before United States Magistrate Judge Brenda N. Weksler.

The case highlights ongoing federal efforts to address illegal immigration and related criminal activity. The Justice Department serves as the principal federal agency for law enforcement, according to the official website.

Court documents allege that all four defendants had been removed from the U.S. multiple times before returning unlawfully. Juarez-Martinez was remanded to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody after serving a sentence for drug trafficking and has two prior felony convictions for being a deported alien found unlawfully in the country. Contreras-Torres was arrested by ICE following a state prison term for possession of controlled substances with intent to sell and has two previous misdemeanor drug convictions along with two prior removals from the U.S.

Castanon-Bautista was turned over to ICE after an arrest involving robbery with a deadly weapon, burglary while armed, and carrying a concealed weapon without a permit; he has also been convicted of larceny from person and other offenses including attempted grand larceny, assault, and drug crimes. Covarrubias-Islas faced charges related to conspiracy under controlled substances laws before his most recent remand; he had three prior removals from the country.

If convicted, Juarez-Martinez faces up to ten years in prison while Contreras-Torres, Castanon-Bautista, and Covarrubias-Islas each face up to two years imprisonment along with fines and supervised release terms.

First Assistant United States Attorney Sigal Chattah for Nevada District and Salt Lake City Acting Field Office Director Ruben Levya announced these charges. The cases were investigated by ICE’s Salt Lake City office based in Las Vegas and will be prosecuted by the District of Nevada U.S. Attorney’s Office.

These prosecutions are part of Operation Take Back America—a nationwide initiative aiming “to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from perpetrators of violent crime.” Members of the public can report crimes or suspicious activity via phone or online tip form links provided by authorities.

The Justice Department includes more than 115,000 employees operating across all states as well as internationally in over 50 countries according to its official website. Garland assumed leadership as Attorney General on March 11, 2021 following his swearing-in ceremony according to department records; during his tenure at Justice he oversaw key prosecutions such as those related to the Oklahoma City bombing case as reported by their official site.

A complaint is merely an accusation; defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
